The Borough Market is a gem. A quick walk from the London Bridge Tube stop, nestled under the train tracks and next to the Southwark Cathedral, it is a warren of fabulous food stalls and take away stands selling spices, cheeses, olives, breads, pastries, meats, fish, curries, produce and more. There are more and more vendors each time I come and the old stand bys as well.
For superb Comte cheese from the Doubs and Jura region of France (borders Switzerland) selected by the owner and brought directly from France, try the Borough Cheese Company. They are one of the fortunate original vendors who store their goods in the storage area below the market. Newer sellers have to haul their goods in and out each market day.
One of my favorite stalls is Mini Magoos, selling homemade granola and breakfast cereals. They have a wonderful combination of flavors. For a remarkable selection of unusual spices, try Spice Mountain. If you are a nut fan, try the cinnamon cocoa almonds from Borough Nuts; the combo of the cinnamon, cocoa and almond flavors is divine.
The absolute best grilled cheese sandwich I’ve ever had is made at Kappacasein, where they also make raclette. The sandwiches have shredded Ogleshield (which they created themselves) and cheddar cheeses on Poilane sourdough bread, with chives and leeks thrown in.
There are places to sit and eat as well. For very fresh fish & chips, try Fish!Restaurant, where you can eat in the restaurant or grab a bite from the takeaway stand and try to snag a seat at the tiny area with a few tables and people watch as customers from around the world queue up for their orders.
