Kyoto is such a treasure of Japanese culture, with one breathtaking shrine after another. However if you want to get away from tourists and experience Japanese culinary culture for which the city is also famous, Nishiki Market is a must see for your visit. The first shop opening in the early 14th century selling wholesale seafood making it one of the oldest markets in the world.
The market is a long shopping arcade nearly half a dozen blocks long filled with the smells and sights of Japanese food and all things pertaining to food. There are stalls selling every kind of seafood imaginable (fresh or dried), vegetables, Japanese spices, pickles, sweets, and cooking utensils. Free samples are offered by many shops.
Above many of the shops are small restaurants, so make sure you go with an empty stomach to be filled with sushi or tempura or whatever specialty the shop may focus on. There are also a few take away stands as well.
