Eastern Market, is a listed as the oldest market in the country. It consists of a small sized hall containing 14 vendors with a lot of meat stands, one excellent cheese purveyor (the cheeses are international with a smattering of US artisan cheeses), some interesting places to get sandwiches or ethnic foods and an empty hall with tables where you can eat your goodies.
Most of the action is around the outside of the market where there are a ton of vendors selling everything from scarves, jewelry and pottery and a flea market as well. Surrounding the market just outside are additional 20+ farmers market vendors. I found the standout artisan was Sonda Tamarr Allen’s Turtle’s Webb jewelry. Her work is unique and beautiful and she is a joy to talk to. There were also a plethora of restaurants to grab lunch or breakfast in the area.I would rate the Eastern Market as worthy of a visit if you are a native of DC, but perhaps not worth a visit as a tourist as there is so much to see in the nation’s capital. It is not nearly on the scale of Reading Terminal in Philly or Cleveland’s West Side Market.
